UFC 97 – Slow Beatdowns

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Rua delivers the knockout blow to Liddell I’ve been MIA this month, with way too many things going on, but I am still alive.

I’m back with an entry about the UFC card that went down last weekend in my birth town of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  UFC 97 didn’t really have a lot of fights that I was interested to see.  As you know I’m not a big fan of Chuck Liddell’s and I knew that Anderson Silva was going to handle Thales Leites.

It is apparent that after his knockout loss to Mauricio Rua, Chuck is probably at the end of his fighting journey.  He’s had a great career, held the championship belt and even beat the hell out of Tito Ortiz… What more can you ask for?  He seemed gun-shy in his fight and couldn’t get off with his punches, although I think he should have been trying to kick more.  Although Rua beat Chuck, I’m still not overly impressed with either.  It should be interesting to see him fight younger, skilled talent like Evans, Machida and even crazy Quinton Jackson.

The main event of Silva vs. Leites was truly a letdown. Leites was outclassed in the octagon and had no idea how to handle Anderson "The Spider" Silva.  Silva was too fast, too crafty and too accurate for Leites and really anyone else in that division for now.  I feel bad for Anderson, because he always wants to put on a good show for the fans and this was surely not it, as the crowd was booing more than cheering the entire 5 round decision.

With UFC 97 done, I’m looking forward to UFC 98 on May 23, 2009. Predictions of the main fights go like this:

Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida – Evans by 3rd round knockout.
Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra – Hughes by 2 round knockout (earlier I hope though, cause I can’t stand Matt Serra!)

With several decent fights on the undercard, UFC 98 looks and should be a better event than UFC 97!

The Madness of March College Hoops!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

It’s Mid-March and all of us College Hoops fans know what that means: Great quality basketball all day and everyday for the next couple of weeks and of course all of the college bracket challenges that you can dream of. My team, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels will not be invited to the big dance, but I will be watching and hoping that North Carolina and Duke, do not win the National Championship. I’ve never been a fan of either team, but I know they always have the dominant squads. So knowing that, you’ll understand why I chose Texas to win the whole thing, although I wouldn’t mind Louisville winning either. You can see my whole crazy bracket here on CBS Sports. And enter your own picks! There is $10,000 up for grabs and most of the time, people with little basketball knowledge end up winning the big prizes!  You can also watch all of the games for free at the official NCAA website.

Everything starts on Thursday, March 19, so get your brackets in and Let’s go Texas or Louisville or Memphis and oh yeah, Oklahoma!

Fantasy Fishing Round Two!

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

The first round is over and the leader of the pack is Terry Moberly, of Kentucky with 12,744 points.  Sadly, that’s not me holding the $100,000 cheque.  I’m following closely behind with a heavy 6,079 points, putting me in position 1,970. Not so good, I know.  But it’s only 1 competition down and many to go, so I’ll make my way up.  I also bit the bullet and signed up for the Players Advantage as it’s only $10 this season and then I found a promo code (EBAY$8) which gave me a two dollar discount. The next tournament is Table Rock Lake and it starts on March 12, 2009, so you still have time to get in on the action. Join the fun and win some cash and prizes. I’m making my way to the top and I’ll keep you posted on the Players Advantage difference.  It seems as though the tools come in very handy in making the right selections.

Good Luck and Happy Fantasy Fishing!

UFC 96 Card Match-ups

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

March 7, 2009 at 7 pm. begins another MMA card brought to you by the UFC.  It should be a pretty good night of fights and looking forward to seeing the main event.  Here’s the card and some predictions. :)

Quinton Jackson
Quinton Jackson
“Rampage”
Height: 6′ 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 205 (93 kg)
Record: 29-7-0

Keith Jardine
Keith Jardine
“The Dean of Mean”
Height:6′ 2" (188 cm)
Weight: 205 (93 kg)
Record: 14-5-1

This should be a very good fight and if Rampage isn’t focused, he’s going down, just like he did against Forrest Griffin.  So I’m calling for an ‘A’ game Quinton Jackson and he TKO’s Jardine in the second round.  Not that Jardine isn’t a tough guy, with a strange herky-jerky style, I just think that Rampage will be too much for him.  Too strong, too fast, too dominant.  It should be a good fight though.

Gabriel Gonzaga
Gabriel Gonzaga
“Napao”
Height: 6′ 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 242 (110 kg)
Record: 10-3-0

Shane Carwin
Shane Carwin
Height: 6′ 3" (191 cm)
Weight: 262 (119 kg)
Record: 10-0-0

I’m not too sure about either of these fighters. Carwin is undefeated, but doesn’t have a lot of known fighters on his resume. Gonzaga is tough, he knocked out a very skilled Mirko Crocop with a head kick (Mirko’s specialty) and Gonzaga was  beaten pretty badly by Randy Couture. Gonzaga is very strong and skilled on the ground with good submissions.  Carwin is a ground and pound specialist, with great knockout power.  Tough decision, but I will go with Gonzaga to win by knockout or submission in round 2. Hopefully he can get passed round one against the heavy hands of Carwin!

Those are the premier fights that I’ll be looking for. If you want more info on the other fights, check out the UFC Official Website, and enjoy a night of good fights!

170 lbs.: Pete Sell (8-4) vs. Matt Brown (8-7)
205 lbs.: Matt Hamill (5-2) vs. Mark Munoz (5-0)
155 lbs.: Jim Miller (13-1) vs. Gray Maynard (6-0)

Under card (May not be broadcast):
170 lbs.: Ryan Madigan (5-0) vs. Tamdan McCrory
185 lbs.: Kendall Grove (9-5) vs. Jason Day (17-7)
205 lbs.: Tim Boetsch (8-2) vs. Jason Brilz (16-1-1)
205 lbs.: Brandon Vera (9-3) vs. Mike Patt (12-3)
155 lbs:: Aaron Riley (27-10-1) vs. Shane Nelson (11-3)

A vacation from the fight game.

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written about anything in the fight world.  And it’s not because there have not been things to discuss.  I really took a break from the fight scene because all of my favorite fighters were getting beat up and beat up badly.

seth-petruzelliIt all started with Seth Petruzeli filling in for an injured Ken Shamrock to fight Kimbo Slice on October 4, 2008.  The fight lasted all of 14 seconds and ended with Kimbo being saved by the referee, so he wouldn’t take any more punishment.  I’m not a huge fan of Kimbo’s, but since Ken couldn’t fight and Seth was a last minute stand in, who no one really knew… I thought it would lights out for Petruzeli and a walk over for Kimbo.  Boy was I wrong.  It’s true what they say in the fight game.  On any given night, as long as it’s a fight, anyone can get knocked out.

calzaghe-jones328

Then on November 8, 2008, my long time favorite, Roy Jones was set to climb back in the ring (disregarding my personal advice to retire) to fight undefeated Joe Calzaghe.  Roy didn’t look too bad and knocked Calzaghe down in the first round with a nice right hand punch.  From there it was all downhill for Roy Jones Jr. He was taken apart, bit by bit, piece by piece by the onslaught of punches from Joe Calzaghe.  My favorite boxer, Roy Jones, after this defeat, needs to retire.  I would like to see Joe Calzaghe take on Bernard Hopkins, since he’s on the circuit of beating up boxers that should retire.

randy_coutureOn to the Mixed Martial Arts world and one of my favorite, never-say-die fighters – Randy Couture takes on the monster of manhood, Brock Lesnar on November 15, 2008 in UFC 91. I was worried about this fight from the time I heard about it happening. Randy has always shocked me with his heart and ability to research his opponents and then pick them apart in the octagon. But Brock at 275 lbs, just seemed too big and too fast.  I however, backed Randy all the way and was wrong… again.  In the second round, after some mutual rough-housing, Brock hits Randy with the cinder blocks he calls hands and drops Randy to the mat. Lesnar follows up with some hammer fists to the head of Couture and the referee has to step in and stop the fight.  Yet another sad day for my fighter, but looking forward to Lesnar vs. Mir, the sequel!

nogueira-vs-mir-ufc92 Funny I should mention Frank Mir, because in UFC 92 on December 27, 2008 he delivered a serious beating to my favorite MMA fighter, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. It was very hard for me to watch as Frank Mir fought the fight of his life and had an answer for everything Nogueira tried. Mir’s striking was excellent, he looked like a golden gloves boxer in the octagon. I would have enjoyed the fight a lot more if Mir wasn’t pummeling my main man, Nogueira, but it was a very good showing for him and I look forward to the rematch of Frank Mir vs Brock Lesnar.  Mir took the first fight by submission, although Lesnar was pounding on him.  Nog, I love ya man, but it’s looking like it’s time to start rapping it up.  One more fight – against Randy Couture.  Win or lose, they  both  go out on a good note.  Two champions in the ring for the last time.

fedor_arlovski Finally, the fall of Andrei Arlovski. From the first time I watched Andrei fight, I liked his style.  He seemed to have all of the skills to become champion.  Punching and kicking skills, ground and pound and submissions too.  Arlovski proved me right and became UFC Heavyweight champion for several years.  He did have a careless streak which became painfully obvious when he fought Fedor Emelianenko for the Affliction : Banned heavyweight title on January 24, 2009.  I wasn’t sure of Arlovski’s chances in this fight, as Fedor has put away several of my MMA favorites in Pride.  I did have faith in Arlovski though, he posessed more of a total package than others Fedor has punished.  Fedor started the fight very aggressively, like normal, but Andrei was able to defend and even neutralize Fedor with attacks of his own.  Towards the end of round 1, Arlovski had Fedor in a corner, delivering power strikes and kicks (this is the careless part), when for some reason, he decided he wanted to throw a flying knee, punch, elbow or something, but before he could get the strike loaded and after he jumped in the air, Fedor launched a powerful and looping overhand right that clipped Arlovski’s chin and put him to sleep in mid-air, then Arlovski fell face first into the mat.  I was crushed, so I can only imagine how Andrei must have felt (after he woke up).  To be doing so well, against a man that many claim to be unbeatable, was tremendous achievement, although the end result was not what he wanted.  I definitely think a rematch is necessary between Fedor and Andrei, but if that can’t happen, Fedor vs. Lesnar is a fight that I would go to see live.

Those are the reasons I have been invisible for the last couple months in the fight world.  It was hard to take all of that, month after month.  But I’m here, and win or lose for my fighters, I’ll let  you know my take on future fights and look forward to some main events just around the corner.
