This Is It! – UFC 100

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

imageJuly 11th, 2009 is a major date in the mixed martial arts world, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship 100 will unfold.

I started watching the UFC from the first event on  November 12, 1993 and became an instant fan.  It was raw and brutal violence back then, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission fighting, dominated the earlier events. I can still remember the female commentator at UFC 1 turning pale and going silent, as a tooth from the mouth of a kicked fighter flew past her.  16 years have passed and the UFC has come a very long way.  Although some will still deem it brutal and barbaric, rules and measures have been put into place, making it safer for the fighters. The fact that fighters take the sport more seriously now, learning all of the ways to fight and becoming multi-dimensional fighters, proves to make the fights more tactical and a little less brutal.

With that 16 year and 99 event history, UFC 100 looks to be a great card, with a great heavyweight grudge match between Brock Lesnar & Frank Mir.  Mir won the first fight, and I feel he will also win the second. Lesnar is a monster of a man, but I feel he lacks the skills to beat Frank Mir.  However, there is always a punchers chance and with the lunch boxes Brock Lesnar calls fists, one punch can mean lights out for Mir. Georges St. Pierre will take on Thiago Alves in a welter-weight match-up that is going to be hard to call.  My heart is with GSP and his skills and ability to become better in every fight. “The Pitbull”, Alves is no scrub and probably one of the most powerful and aggressive fighter this weight class has seen.  And a fight that has been gaining a lot of steam, thanks to the Ultimate Fighter show, is Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping. Yes, Henderson is getting old, but he is tried and tested like a training partner of his, Randy Couture, and we all know how well he did.  Bisping is in for a surprise if he thinks he is going to walk over Dan Henderson, as the only area he beats Dan Henderson is in the running of the mouth. I’m hoping for a knock-out in that one.

Enjoy the card and congratulations to the Dana White and UFC for hitting the 100 event milestone and check out Bodog to place your UFC wagers!  I’m hoping to clean up! :)

Machida KO’s Evans at UFC 98

Monday, May 25th, 2009

machida kos evans

Lyoto Machida made Rashad Evans pay dearly for his slow-start tendencies. Lyoto’s Karate background, stance and skills continue to make him a difficult opponent to deal with, as his 14-0-0 record shows.  It only took 2 rounds for Machida to breakdown Rashad Evans with his fantastic accuracy and quick strikes.  They say speed kills, but all of the speed that Evans posses didn’t help him in this bout.  Evans seemed confused, hesitant and apprehensive to make moves against Machida’s awkward, but effective fighting style.  A very good fight and Machida is going to be hard to beat.

The UFC 98 card wasn’t the best but had a few flashes of excitement.  However, the fight I most looked forward to seeing: Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra, was a bit of a snoozer.  Matt Hughes won, but I was hoping for a painful knockout or submission by Hughes as I’m not a fan of the overly vocal, Matt Serra.    Both seemed a little slugging in the Octagon, but although Matt Hughes spoke of retirement earlier, he mentioned in a post fight interview that he "wasn’t going anywhere".

Upcoming  events:
UFC 99 – June 13, 2009 – Franklin vs. Silva
UFC 100 – July 11, 2009 – Lesnar vs Mir

The NBA – It’s Fantastic!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Only 4 teams left and it’s time for the real basketball that only played at playoff time in the NBA and by "real" I mean defense is being played.  So let’s map this out:

Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

I would love Orlando to win the whole thing, but I’m not sure they can deal with Lebron and Cleveland.  So the Cavs win that series 4-2 (but I hope I’m wrong!)

The Lakers should walk over Denver, although Denver has played pretty well with Chauncy Billups leading the squad. And keeping in mind that the Lakers went 7 games against the Houston Rockets (without Yao and McGrady) I think this one has 7 game potential as well, with the Lakers winning 4-3.

I can’t map out the next round with a good conscience, but Cleveland to defeat whoever they meet in the finals, 4-1.   Now sit back and watch the Dunk of The Night, below!

Chuck Daly Passes Away At Age 78

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

chuck_dalyIt is a sad day for basketball players, fans and the general population of Detroit, Michigan.

NBA Hall of Fame coach, Charles Jerome Daly (aka: Chuck Daly) died this morning, at his Jupiter, Florida home with his family by his side.   Daly had been battling pancreatic cancer, but succumb to the disease on the morning of May 9th, 2009.

I was never a fan of the Detroit Pistons, but when coach Chuck Daly took over the captains seat, I had to respect his abilities as a coach. The "Bad Boy" Pistons that Daly created weren’t nice, but they got the job done, winning 2 NBA Championships, back to back in 1989 and 1990.  Daly was able to do what other coaches were not and that was bring out the best in a team that had a small, but very point-guard (Isiah Thomas) as their main star.  Chuck Daly also lead the first "Dream Team" to Olympic Gold in 1992. Daly moved to several NBA franchise teams, but enjoyed most of his success with the Detroit Pistons and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994.  Daly is ranked ninth in playoff victories (75), 10th in post-season winning percentage (.595) and in 1996, to mark the NBA’s 50th season, he was named one of the NBA’s Top 10 coaches in history.

Coach Daly will be missed by players, coaches, general managers, owners and fans of the National Basketball Association and basketball worldwide.

Condolences to the Daly family and friends. Daly is survived by his wife, Terry; daughter Cydney and two grandchildren.

Pound-for-Pound Pacquiao KO’s Hatton

manny pacquiao vs ricky hatton

One of the many "rights" Manny Pacquiao delivered to the face of Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009.  Manny Pacquiao was the favorite in this light welter-weight fight since he dismantled Oscar De-La Hoya in a previous bout.  Pacquiao has certainly become a ring tactician, with speed, power and overall ring generalship and control of his opponents.  But not many expected to see, tough chinned, England’s poster-boy, Ricky Hatton.  Manny’s hall of fame trainer, Freddy Roach knew something that others didn’t, when he called the fight to be over by knockout, in 3 rounds.  Roach was wrong… it ended viciously in two.  Pacquiao’s  hand speed, footwork, precision and power, amongst other things, were way too much for the chin-first style that Hatton served up.  After taking severe punishment in round 1 and with 8 seconds remaining in round 2, Manny Pacquiao launched a short left hook that sent Ricky Hatton to dreamland.  Hatton was unconscious before his body hit the ground and his head hit the mat.  Thankfully, no serious injuries occurred for Hatton,

From the time I saw little Manny Pacquiao take out Marco Antonio Barrera, not once, but twice, he became one of my favorite light-weight boxers.  Barrera was my former favorite but the way Manny handled him, let me know it was time to retire Barrera and move on to Manny.  Not only is Manny Pacquiao a great fighter, his ability to stay humble and grounded is very impressive.  I’ve never been a fan of all the trash talking, so to see a guy like Manny, who takes the sport of boxing seriously and like a job, I can only admire him and hope that other boxers and people in general, save the trash-talking and chest-thumping and show it in their performances, whatever it may be.

Congratulations and thanks to Manny Pacquiao for providing such a great fight and a dominating performance.  With the chatter of Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming out of retirement, Mayweather vs Pacquiao is a fight that everyone will be waiting to see and although Floyd is fast, Manny Pacquiao will win that fight. (Yes I said it!)
