Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock

October 2nd, 2008

Really looking forward to this fight, although Ken Shamrock is a little bit old for this fight game right now.  I just hope he has a better showing than the his last fight against Robert Berry at Cage Rage 25, where Ken suffered an embarassing knockout.  I liked Ken in the old days when he battled Royce Gracie, when the UFC was in its infancy.  Ken was a strong fighter with dangerous ankle and leg-lock submission skills.  But after his loses to Tito Ortiz and his time in the WWF he doesn’t seem like the same man.

Kimbo Slice is a whole different kind of fighter.  Just google his name and you’ll find countless links to videos of this internet sensation delivering beat-downs to various opponents in street fights and backyard brawls.  No doubt about it, Kimbo is a tough guy, with very heavy hands and he knows how to knock people out in a stand-up slugfest type of fight.  In his limited MMA fights, he has proven himself to be a decent fighter in the ring as well, although his opponents have not been the best.

Who’s going to win? Had it been 1998 instead of 2008, I would pick Ken Shamrock hands down to break Kimbo’s ankle or separate his knee, but sadly it is not.  Although Ken seems to be a little more serious about this fight, I’m not sure he can deal with the onslaught of Kimbo’s punches.  Kimbo however has cardio issues that he has to overcome should this fight go this distance, which I highly doubt will happen.  So I’m calling for a knockout for Kimbo Slice over Ken Shamrock, in late round one.  I’m going to enjoy this one!

A good laugh can always be found when traveling the web.

old_lady002I know there are a select group of religious folks out there that think the Internet is the return of or a tool that Satan/Devil will use to gather his minions and wreak havoc on the earth. I’m not that religious, but what I do know is that thanks to the Internet, a wealth of information and opinions from around the globe, raw and uncensored by any large publishing media are available for those with access to it.  For that reason alone, the Internet is a fantastic place.

Here is just one example to back that up. Today, while chatting with my Dad, we discussed sending cash via regular post, in a birthday card.  I knew this wasn’t the best idea, but I had heard before that it might be illegal as well.  So I opened up Firefox and decided to do a little digging.  Browsing through my Google results, I found that it is not illegal to send cash in the United States and Canada; although not recommended, but it is illegal in Barbados (my folks birthplace).  All done within 15 to 30 seconds, no phone book, no yellow pages, no waiting on hold and no Encyclopedia Britannica…  You can’t beat that.  And here’s the real kicker, in my search results I ran into a message forum on Snopes.com that offered the following gem, posted by Charlie23.

A mail carrier was finishing his route, and in the last mailbox he found an outgoing letter addressed in shaky handwriting to “God”. Not sure what to do with it, he shows it to some colleagues back at the post office and they decide to open it. Inside, written in the same frail script there is a simple letter:

“Dear God, I am an 83 year old widow living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had a hundred dollars in it which was all the money I had until my next pension check. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with. I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?”

They were all touched by the letter, so they passed it around the office and took up a collection, winding up with $96. The carrier put the letter back in the envelope along with the money and the next day he slipped it back into the same box. A few days later there was another letter, again addressed to “God”. Expecting some quaint note, he took it back to the office and everybody huddled around as he opened it. Inside was a letter that read:

“Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Thanks to your generosity, I was able to buy groceries and pay all my bills for the month. I told all of my friends how you answered my prayers, but I noticed there was 4 dollars missing. I’m sure it was those thieving bastards at the post office.”

A true classic.  You just can’t mess with the old folks, they’ll get you every time.  Thanks to Colin Smyth for letting me borrow his “old lady” artwork.  Check out his blog and works, he’s quite an artist.

Evan Tanner: RIP to a Warrior.

September 9th, 2008

evantannerEvan Tanner is definitely not someone I would want to meet in the UFC octagon. He had heart and a never say die mentality and drive that I only see in 2 other fighters: Randy Couture and Forrest Griffin. It was very sad news to hear that Mr. Tanner; born on February 11th, 1971, passed away on September 8th, 2008. It appears that he died in the desert while on a warrior type excursion that he seemed pumped to go on. Details are sketchy at this point, but all I know is Evan was quite a talented, smart and strong individual. If you’ve ever read his blog, you’ll know what I’m talking about.  He didn’t pull any punches and let his fans and readers know exactly what he was going through, like dealing with alcoholism, not to mention that he achieved UFC champion status being a self-trained fighter.  Evan Tanner, you will be missed, but your spirit and dedication will lead others as an example of what it takes to be a true champion and that the path to get there is not paved with rose petals. Condolences to your family and friends.  Rest in peace.

Rashad Evans says: "Good-night Chuck!"

September 8th, 2008

rashad-evsns-wall-smI have never been a fan of Chuck Liddell’s as I really never thought he was that good of a fighter. Although I really enjoyed when he knocked the hell out of Tito Ortiz, a guy I really don’t like. But on September 6th, I picked the upset by Rashad “Sugar” Evans to not only win the fight against Liddell, but to knock him out in the second round and some people still owe me some money for that one!  UFC 88 offered a decent fight card with Rich Franklin winning a good TKO over Matt Hamil and of course the beautiful over-hand right thrown by Rashad that left Chucky-Boy seeing stars.  Rashad is normally a slow starter in the Octagon, but I knew Chuck did not have the tools to deal with the agility and fast hands of Rashad.  People for some reason thought it would be the usual, “try to take Chuck down all night” affair, but for Rashad to win, he had to take it to Chuck and take it to him hard. He did just that and surprised a lot of his critics and especially Chuck Liddell.  I’m not sure if Rashad Evans is champion material yet, because his fight game still has holes.  Although he is very quick and strong, he is missing the submission skills that can take him to the next level.  Kevin Randleman and even Quinton “Rampage” Jackson lacked the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to have true longevity although both were champions in the UFC. Guys, pay a visit to one of my favorite fighters: Antonio Nogueira and I guarantee all 3 of you will be extremely difficult to beat. Congratulations Rashad, enjoy the great win and keep the intensity up and keep striving to win that UFC belt!

Riddex Plus – Product Review

August 5th, 2008

Times have definitely changed and it seems like major league baseball players are wrestlers aren’t the only ones taking steroids. Bugs are getting bigger and faster every day and we get our share in the house which freak out the family and then it’s time to go “bug-huntin”.  Like you, I had seen the infomercial’s about the Riddex Plus digital bug repellent system and of course I was skeptical and no one else I knew had tried it out.  So I took one for the team and ordered a couple for myself and some family members.  At $29.99 per unit and a special offer of a second unit free, it seemed like a worthwhile test and investment.

Our main issues were ants and spiders and although the Riddex system states that you only need one unit per floor, I decided to plug 2 in, since I live in a bungalow with no basement at about 2200 sq. ft.  The claim is that the product also keeps small rodents away as well, although I haven’t seen any of those around our place.

I won’t get into too much of the technology behind this device, but if you want more detailed information, please click here.  The basic concept is that it uses the internal wiring of any structure to send electronic pulses that deter pests from wanting to come in.  It is a cool little unit that plugs into any outlet and even sports a nightlight capability for those that might need it.  No buzzing, but it does have a green and intermittent red flashing light that might annoy some people out there, so plugging it in somewhere out of sight is an easy solution.

The product has been in place for almost 2 months now and I have to say that other than 2 ants after the first couple of days of having the system plugged in, I have not seen one bug inside of the house and trust me, that is a huge relief.  Even flying insects don’t appear to be interested in coming in the house, although they do buzz around outside of the premises.

The Riddex Plus gets a thumbs-up from me and I’ll be waiting to get some reviews back from family members once they’ve had some time to verify some of the results for them.  And I’d like to hear from any readers that tried it out too! So if you are like me and have had enough of bugs on the inside and don’t want to kill yourself and family with bug sprays, try the Riddex Plus system and live bug free!  If not… Happy Bug-Huntin!
