Machida KO’s Evans at UFC 98

May 25th, 2009

machida kos evans

Lyoto Machida made Rashad Evans pay dearly for his slow-start tendencies. Lyoto’s Karate background, stance and skills continue to make him a difficult opponent to deal with, as his 14-0-0 record shows.  It only took 2 rounds for Machida to breakdown Rashad Evans with his fantastic accuracy and quick strikes.  They say speed kills, but all of the speed that Evans posses didn’t help him in this bout.  Evans seemed confused, hesitant and apprehensive to make moves against Machida’s awkward, but effective fighting style.  A very good fight and Machida is going to be hard to beat.

The UFC 98 card wasn’t the best but had a few flashes of excitement.  However, the fight I most looked forward to seeing: Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra, was a bit of a snoozer.  Matt Hughes won, but I was hoping for a painful knockout or submission by Hughes as I’m not a fan of the overly vocal, Matt Serra.    Both seemed a little slugging in the Octagon, but although Matt Hughes spoke of retirement earlier, he mentioned in a post fight interview that he "wasn’t going anywhere".

Upcoming  events:
UFC 99 – June 13, 2009 – Franklin vs. Silva
UFC 100 – July 11, 2009 – Lesnar vs Mir

Take a "Stand" with Tavis Smiley

May 24th, 2009

stand by tavis smileyI just received word that Tavis Smiley has produced and directed his first feature film: Stand, although I haven’t seen it yet.   If you don’t know Tavis Smiley, he is the host of his own syndicated radio show and television show on PBS.  Quite a few years back, Tavis was the anchor on BET’s News Program and it was obvious that he had talent, knowledge and the ability to conduct an interview and keep both the viewers and interviewee entertained. Although I’ve never seen Tavis get angry (he has a very kind and quiet demeanor), he has the courage to ask the tough questions.

I am very happy to hear about Tavis’ first film and the content, subject matter and brief previews I have seen so far seem promising.  I wouldn’t expect any less from Mr. Smiley.  Congratulations Tavis!

The tag-line for the film is: What do YOU stand for?  I stand for equality. Everyone given the same chance to succeed and fail, no matter what colour they are, religion they follow or their sexual preference.

Film Synopsis:
It was the summer of 2008 in Memphis, birthplace of Blues. America was commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdrop of then Senator Barack Obama emerging as the first African American to become the Democratic presidential nominee. As America approached the historic presidential election, the national dialogue and debate intensified about race relations, politics and the legacy of the civil rights movement.

Broadcaster Tavis Smiley dissects this national discourse with ten Black male friends over several days during a special road trip through Memphis and Nashville. While visiting places like the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King died, and Stax records, credited with laying the roots of southern soul, Smiley and friends explore the diversity and complexity of the Black male experience in America past, present and future.

STAND reveals the journey of a unique group of scholars, musicians, comedians and social critics as they gather for a rare reflection of brotherhood while confronting their own roles and responsibilities as pioneers of social progress.

CAST:
Tavis Smiley, Dick Gregory, Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, Cliff West, Eddie Glaude, BeBe Winans, Wren T. Brown, Daron Boyce, Robert Smith and Raymond Ross. Special appearances by Sam Moore, Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

As Malcolm X once said: "If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything."  So… What do YOU stand for?  Check out some video below.  And watch the movie!

The NBA – It’s Fantastic!

May 19th, 2009

Only 4 teams left and it’s time for the real basketball that only played at playoff time in the NBA and by "real" I mean defense is being played.  So let’s map this out:

Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Lakers

I would love Orlando to win the whole thing, but I’m not sure they can deal with Lebron and Cleveland.  So the Cavs win that series 4-2 (but I hope I’m wrong!)

The Lakers should walk over Denver, although Denver has played pretty well with Chauncy Billups leading the squad. And keeping in mind that the Lakers went 7 games against the Houston Rockets (without Yao and McGrady) I think this one has 7 game potential as well, with the Lakers winning 4-3.

I can’t map out the next round with a good conscience, but Cleveland to defeat whoever they meet in the finals, 4-1.   Now sit back and watch the Dunk of The Night, below!

Nobody Saw Nick… Or Did They?

May 15th, 2009

a little help for a senior Picture this…

It’s 94F/34C degrees and quite humid.  There is an old man walking and struggling to do so and it appears that he is trying to flag down passing vehicles for help.

I am riding my bike on the opposite side of the road, approaching him.  I notice that there is a police officer with his radar gun in hand, trying to catch motorists speeding in the same direction I am going in.  On the same side as the old man, a church service just finished and the congregation is exiting quickly… all passing by this old man.

It was obvious to me that no one else saw this man and if they did, they were not compelled to stop.  So I navigated through the traffic and made it over to him.

His name was Nick and he wasn’t doing too well.  He was 79 years old and had been in a car accident a month or two ago and was only released from the hospital 2 weeks ago.  He was on his way to the doctors and became disoriented.  I gave him my bottle of Gatorade to drink and showed him the police officer on the other side of the road.  We walked over and I let the cop know about the situation.

"What do you want me to do?" said the cop.

I showed him the side of his police cruiser that said "To Serve and Protect".

He didn’t seem overly impressed with that and even less enthusiastic about helping Nick.  So I told Nick to have a seat right on the hood of his police cruiser and I would ride my bike home, get my car and then take him wherever he needed to go.

I left him sitting on the car, with a protesting police officer.  As I’m speeding home, I’m wondering if this cop will let him sit in the air conditioned car, give him a ride or just leave him there and take off.

I get my car and head back…  As I approach, I see the police cruiser, but no Nick.  I pull up and ask the cop what happened to the old man? He says that he started walking and pointed down the road.  Very nice… I took his name and badge number, because his superiors will be hearing about this.  I make my way down the road and there is Nick, stumbling and staggering, almost info traffic.   I pull up beside him and he recognizes me, which is a good thing.  I get him in the car and we head for his doctors office.   We get there and they were expecting him hours prior, but I let them know what happened and they stop complaining and threatening late fees for missing his appointment time.  Other than heat exhaustion, blisters on his feet and elevated blood pressure, Nick was going to be ok.  He thanked me and shook my hand for 5 minutes and I was on my way. The doctors office said they would call a taxi for him to get home and I left my card with them just in case that didn’t work out.

So many things went wrong here… I know we aren’t supposed to pick up hitchhikers, but how come no passers-by called the police or someone about an old man staggering on the road.  How come the church folk drove right by Nick, like he didn’t exist.  Isn’t that what church is all about… Helping each other?  And the police officer, too busy with trying to give out tickets, rather than help an old man in need.  It was a sad scene.  That old guy could have been my Dad or a friends Dad… This is surely not the way things are supposed to be.

If someone needs help… Please help them.  Because it could be you or someone you care about, the next time.
