The CNBC million dollar challenge is back!

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

It’s back! Last year I got in on the fun with the CNBC Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge and it was very interesting and a learning experience as well. I was never really big on the stock market, but this contest really opened my eyes to some of the possibilities available when trading stocks.  Oh and did I forget to mention that prize of $1, 000, 000 dollars of cold hard cash? After a late and slow start, I found myself in the top 100 in 90th place with only a couple weeks remaining.  But sadly, things took a bad turn when people were found to be cheating the system. The whole thing was amazing really.  Stock guru’s were writing books, ebooks and creating youtube videos on how to win the CNBC challenge.  People really went crazy over this and I guess the lure of the money made them throw caution and morals to the wind. So I lost interest pretty quickly with all of that, not to mention they kept on delaying the announcement of the winner, made me even more annoyed.  To be honest, I only found out who won, while writing this article.  Congratulations to her and I will leave it at that. If you want more info, google it for yourself.

So, if you have ever had any kind of interest in stocks, currency and forex trading, sign-up for this challenge and try to win some of the great prizes up for grabs.  CNBC has really fine tuned the process this time around, so hopefully there is no trickery by the contestants.  My main tip to you is to collect on the bonus bucks… Here is a website where you can get all of the answers, daily: ChallengeChat or search for your own sources… there are many out there.  Also, send your friends too.  Those are easy ways to pick quick cash. As for picking the stocks? You are on your own!  I want that money too. ;-) Good luck!

The Fairness Doctrine? Really???

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

http://www.cultureandmediainstitute.org/specialreports/2008/Fairness_Doctrine/Images/CMI_FairnessDoctrine_Front.JPGI’ve been hearing all about this “Fairness Doctrine” on the radio now that all of the election buzz is over.  What is this “fairness doctrine”  you ask?  Here is what Wikipedia has to say.

The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that required the holders of broadcast licenses to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced. The United States Supreme Court upheld the Commission’s general right to enforce such a policy where channels were limited, but the courts have generally not ruled that the FCC is obliged to do so. In 1987, the FCC abolished the Fairness Doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or Congressional legislation.

I also found an interesting article from Fred Langemark III about it and I couldn’t agree with him more. I think unbiased media is an oxymoron these days, but I do think that it is a bad idea to try and start restricting what can be said and by who. There are so many ways to find information in today’s world that as individuals, each of us should be able to decide who we want to listen to and be able to find our own facts.  I listen to Rush & Sean when I’m in the car, but I disagree with 99% of the things they say… but to me it’s entertaining and I always find it interesting to hear the arguments and opinions of the extremists out there and then I am able to look at the facts and fiction and make my own decisions. Putting something like the fairness doctrine in place would make a lot of the people listened to in the media into liars and hypocrites, which some already are! Just leave that thing alone. People can choose what and who they want to listen to and if they want to blindly believe everything they hear, without their own investigation and fact checking, then they were lost in the first place.

President Elect – Barack Obama!

Friday, November 7th, 2008

I would first like to say congratulations to Barack Obama and his family, Joe Biden and his family and a HUGE well-done to the Obama campaign organizers, staff and volunteers for running what will go down as being the best presidential campaign in U.S. history! November 4th, 2008 will forever be a historic date in U.S. History, when a black man was elected as the President of the United States of America.

When things started to heat up in race to be President of the United States, I did my best to keep my views and opinions away from this blog and trust me, it wasn’t always easy.

I wasn’t sure that Barack would win this election, with the huge obstacle of race to overcome and although people say and claimed race shouldn’t be an issue in this campaign, anyone in their right mind had to know it would be.  But even with that age-old hurdle to overcome, I am very happy to see that a majority of American voters were able to look passed the feable claims of Barack’s opponents, John McCain and Sarah Palin and vote for the candidate that they thought would be the most progressive and positive in leading America towards better times. And I know that John McCain doesn’t have many years left of service in the U.S. Senate, but in his remaining years he will have the opportunity of “reaching across the isle” and working with Barack Obama in making America better for all of its people.

As a black man, I am extremely proud of Barack Obama and what he has achieved.  It is a landmark achievement, but it is only the beginning of his journey.  And although many have made statements like “rascism is over”, I simply ask you to review some of polls that stated 20% to 30% of Americans stated that they could not vote for a black man regarldless of where he stands on the issues.  Unless that percentage of the population has magically vanished, rasicm will still be an issue in America, although my greatest hope is that black people around the world can now truly see that anything is possible.  It’s not going to be easy, there are going to great obstacles, opponents and naysayers, but if you persevere with respect, dignity and knowledge, what you want to achieve is possible.  This whole issue really hit home for me when speaking with the older generation about what they went through in the 1960′s before I was born and how they thought it would never be possible for America to elect a black man as President. As black parents, we constantly tell our kids how much harder they have to work, how they can be president some day and thanks to Barack Obama, black children now have a visible, tangible example that they can see and hear to verify what their parents have been telling them for years.

I with Barack Obama & Joe Biden all the best in their Presidency and although they are taking office at a very difficult time, I hope they will be able to stay true to their beliefs and not let the political machine run them over and compromise their values.

Like Barack Obama said, he needs all of our help to make America a better place.  So no matter your party, I hope we can all assist him in making America a better place for everyone.

“The Champ” – No April fool!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The Peoples Champ “And I go: Pardon?” The Champ says before he unleashes a play-by-play beat-down of some poor misunderstood, chump. I’m not sure how I grew up in Toronto for 30 plus years and never heard of this Jake Edwards creation, but I’m glad I finally did. The Champ is a hilarious retired boxer that probably should have retired much earlier. All those blows he took to the head now cause him to take the things that people say, entirely the wrong way.

“After one particularly muddy game against Chicago I overheard one of the linemen, Knuckles Muldoon — he was my cut man from when I fought Liston — say to my wife: ‘Hey, Mrs. Champ, would you mind polishing my purple helmet?’

“And I go: Pardon?”

Knuckles says, “I said Champ, I just asked your wife to polish my purple helmet for me.”

“And so I lose it,” says the Champ. “I snap. I head fake him with the Gatorade — and the idiot goes for it — I hit him so many times he thinks he’s surrounded, I swing him around by the nostrils until his butt-hole whistles …”

“Hey Champ… Why don’t you take your hat and jacket off?”

Jake Edwards
, aka: Brother Jake has mastered the art of the double entendre, with his macho and quick tempered character, The Champ. Jake really became “The Champ” while he worked in Toronto at Q-107 on “The Morning Drive” show. For a couple of free audio samples of The Champ in action, click here. You can also buy his full audio disks from Pacific Music (I’m not sure why they aren’t on Amazon)under the following titles:

Bogus rapist email surfaces again.

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’m pretty sure that at some time since 2001, you have received an email titled, “Through a rapists eyes” or “Through the eyes of a rapist”, an exaggerated tale of so called facts and figures about rhyme and reason behind to bottom feeders more commonly known as rapists. Although this email is inaccurate at best, it does however shed some light on known facts that women should pay attention to on their day-to-day travels. So ladies… please take heed and keep yourselves save on these mean and crazy streets we have out there.

  • Always be aware of your surroundings and who may be lurking in, around and under them (parked cars, dumpsters, doors to buildings)
  • When parking, try to park close to security / pay booths and near to bright lights and cameras, avoiding under-ground parking is always a good idea
  • Take martial arts or at least basic self defense classes. You don’t need to be Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, but the self-confidence you build from taking these classes will let you walk a little taller, because nothing says “come and get me” like a scared target cowering down the street. And a quick effective strike can mean the difference between life and death. Always try to put up a fight, make noise, cause a scene whatever you have to do to make it more difficult for an offender.
  • RUN! Don’t become that dear stuck in headlights. Use that fear and run faster than you ever have, you life may depend on it.

If you haven’t seen that email, here is a copy that has been circulating. Much of the facts have been debunked and unproven, but the tips are worth a read.

Hi, everyone! I just finished taking the most amazing self-defense class, sponsored by Shandwick, and I wanted to share some really valuable info with you before it goes out of my head. The guy who taught the class has a female friend who was attacked last year in the parking garage at Westport Plaza in St. Louis one night after work and taken to an abandoned house and raped. He started a women’s group and began teaching these classes soon after. This guy is a black belt in karate and trains twice a year with Steven Segal. He and the others in this group interviewed a bunch of rapists and date rapists in prison on what they look for and here’s some interesting facts:

The #1 thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not as common targets.

The #2 thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. The #1 outfit they look for is overalls because many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing and on overalls the straps can be easily cut.

They also look for women on their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

The time of day men are most likely to attack and rape a woman is in the early morning, between 5 and 8:30 a.m. The number one place women are abducted from/attacked at is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms.

The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught. Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years. If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two

for them to realize that going after you isn’t worth it because it will be time-consuming.

These men said they will not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

Several defense mechanisms he taught us are:

  • If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell “Stop” or “Stay back!” Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target. If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes), yelling “I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY” and holding it out will be a deterrent.
  • If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them. If they grab your wrist, pull your wrist back so your hand is in waving position (palm facing forward) and twist it toward yourself and pull your arm away. It is hard to hold onto wrist bones that are moving in that way. They stumble toward you and you stumble back, so you can use that momentum to bring the same hand out and backhand them with your knuckles in the forehead, nose, or teeth.
  • If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh. HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands – the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it. It hurts.
  • After the initial hit, always go for the groin. If you hit a guy’s testicles, it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble and he’s out of there.
  • When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.

Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can, and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel a little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

Please forward this to any woman you know, it’s simple stuff that could save her life.

For the complete article and the breakdown of all the fake facts and unsubstantiated claims, check out Snopes.com. But like the email says, if reading this can save a life or someone getting raped, that is my motivation for posting this, since the email has resurfaced again.

Peace, love and safety, Y’all.
