Capture It’s taken her a little time, but a very good friend of mine has stretched her entrepreneurial legs and cut her first video project, a promo video for the rock band, Bombs.  Congratulations!

Lianne Gesior has been a student and fan of the graphic and video editing world for a long time, but felt she didn’t have the skills to turn it into a business.  I’m happy to say that she was wrong and I knew she could do it all along.  You won’t find a harder working person, with a great work ethic, huge heart and sense for doing what’s right, than Lianne.

So if you are looking for promotional videos, graphics or anything that catches your eye on a computer, contact Lianne at Creative Imagery Toronto.

Good luck and all the best, Lianne!

Why aren’t you using Skype?

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

It’s around the time of year when I have to renew my Skype & Skype-Out services.  To my surprise, many of my friends, clients and colleagues have no real idea of what Skype is about. In this world of “instant messaging” we all have MSN, Yahoo, ICQ or some kind of messaging system on our computers.  So why have SkypeSkype offers the best quality of PC to PC voice and video communications, which costs the very large price of FREE!  Yes, other messengers offer this kind of capability, but where Skype surpasses them is the ability to call land lines and cell phones from your computer at a very reasonable price.  For a complete year of unlimited calls to the US and Canada, the fee was only around$25.  They even offer the ability to receive calls to your computer, but that is limited to certain areas.

Not only is the quality of the calls you can make through Skype superior, the people that run the company have the right idea about promoting and marketing this service and they aren’t trying to gouge their users with outlandish prices.  And the real hook for me was when they started the PC to Phone service, they offered it for FREE for almost 2 years, and not just to beta testers, but to anyone who wanted to use it.  That is the type of company I want to do business with.  One that sees the big picture and isn’t lead by greed, and that quality far out weighs quantity.

So do yourself a favor and save yourself some money. Give Skype a try.  They have a pay-as-you-go option, so you can test it out and see if it’s for you.  Pick up a headset if you don’t already have one and talk to your friends and family without watching the clock.

Working with freelancers…

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Mr Kenneth Koh, a fellow blogger wrote an interesting article about the relationship between the client and the developer and the things to look for and avoid when you need work done on an software or website development project.  It’s a good article and very informative. You can find it here. But as a freelancer and developer, I had my own two-cents to chip in.

I agree with a lot of what you have to say Kenneth and Gerald, I feel your pain, but don’t give up hope on finding someone that can really help you.

I think the key problem that arises between client and developer is honesty. A lot of developers and consultants that I know personally are not honest with their clients and potential clients. I have gotten plenty of emergency calls from them, when they have taken on a project that they do not have the skills to complete. The lure of the almighty dollar makes them say, “YES, I CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT!” That is not my style. I do not personally work with Macromedia Flash, so if you ask me for that, I will have to decline on that portion of your project. Being honest may have lost me a few contracts here and there, but those clients have always come back with other opportunities for me, because they appreciate my honesty.

As far as deadlines are concerned, many clients have lofty expectations in that area. As Kenneth said, some projects can change rapidly based on a client’s whim. I just ask that clients keep in mind that the development process is not an easy one and while some changes and modifications might take a minute, others can take days.

The old adage, “You get what you pay for.” is not always true though. I have had to step in for several clients that paid abnormally high rates for work that was sub-par to say the least, so you can’t always use higher price as an indication of good work.

The bottom line is, do your research, check out previous developer/freelancer projects, ask for references, shop your idea/project around and most importantly be honest about deadlines and expectations and let the developer/freelancer know you expect the same from them.

If you have any ideas or projects on your mind, contact me and I would be glad to work with you on making them a reality.

Good luck!

The CNBC million dollar challenge is back!

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

It’s back! Last year I got in on the fun with the CNBC Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge and it was very interesting and a learning experience as well. I was never really big on the stock market, but this contest really opened my eyes to some of the possibilities available when trading stocks.  Oh and did I forget to mention that prize of $1, 000, 000 dollars of cold hard cash? After a late and slow start, I found myself in the top 100 in 90th place with only a couple weeks remaining.  But sadly, things took a bad turn when people were found to be cheating the system. The whole thing was amazing really.  Stock guru’s were writing books, ebooks and creating youtube videos on how to win the CNBC challenge.  People really went crazy over this and I guess the lure of the money made them throw caution and morals to the wind. So I lost interest pretty quickly with all of that, not to mention they kept on delaying the announcement of the winner, made me even more annoyed.  To be honest, I only found out who won, while writing this article.  Congratulations to her and I will leave it at that. If you want more info, google it for yourself.

So, if you have ever had any kind of interest in stocks, currency and forex trading, sign-up for this challenge and try to win some of the great prizes up for grabs.  CNBC has really fine tuned the process this time around, so hopefully there is no trickery by the contestants.  My main tip to you is to collect on the bonus bucks… Here is a website where you can get all of the answers, daily: ChallengeChat or search for your own sources… there are many out there.  Also, send your friends too.  Those are easy ways to pick quick cash. As for picking the stocks? You are on your own!  I want that money too. ;-) Good luck!

A Myspace summer? Forget about it!

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

e-rewardsFriends and colleagues often ask me about online surveys and how much money can be made with them.   Over the last couple of months, I did a small sampling  of some of the more well known and more reputable survey sites out there and was able to make some money.  Are you going to become a millionaire doing this?  I don’t think so.  But if you become affiliated with a great number of survey web sites you should be able to make some money for the time you put in.  In the 3 months of my testing (which was very part time), I was able to make approximately $325.  Not a lot, but instead of the kids spending 24 hours a day text messaging and killing their summer time on Myspace.com and other social networking sites, why not put them to work doing this?  And it’s also cool way for those that are too young to get a summer job, to make a little cash for themselves.  Teaching our children a little entrepreneurship, time management and the value of earning a dollar can never be a bad thing. Below are some of the survey networks I was involved with.  In no particular order and my apologies to any I’ve missed.
